Tamil Nadu politics has entered a completely new phase after the 2026 Assembly elections delivered a rare hung Assembly. The results have reshaped the State’s political balance and pushed actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay to the center of power.
His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party in the State. In its first Assembly election, TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member House. The party now stands just 10 seats away from the majority mark.
The result shocked political observers across the country. It also triggered intense coalition talks and nonstop political speculation in Chennai.
Vijay’s TVK Changes Tamil Nadu’s Political Landscape
For decades, Tamil Nadu politics revolved around two major Dravidian parties — the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
The 2026 election changed that equation dramatically.

Attention has now shifted to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which holds two important seats in the Assembly.
VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan has hinted that the party may support TVK. If that happens, the TVK-led alliance will comfortably cross the majority mark.
Such a move would clear the final hurdle for government formation.
The Indian National Congress, which won five seats, has already extended support to TVK. This support has further improved Vijay’s chances of forming the government.
Coalition Politics Returns to Tamil Nadu
