Tamil Nadu politics has entered a completely new phase after the 2026 Assembly elections delivered a rare hung Assembly. The results have reshaped the State’s political balance and pushed actor-turned-politician C. Joseph Vijay to the center of power.
His party, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), emerged as the single largest party in the State. In its first Assembly election, TVK won 108 seats in the 234-member House. The party now stands just 10 seats away from the majority mark.
The result shocked political observers across the country. It also triggered intense coalition talks and nonstop political speculation in Chennai.
Vijay’s TVK Changes Tamil Nadu’s Political Landscape
For decades, Tamil Nadu politics revolved around two major Dravidian parties — the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (AIADMK).
The 2026 election changed that equation dramatically.
TVK’s massive rise has disrupted the traditional political structure of the State. Vijay’s strong fan base, youth appeal, and promises of transparent governance helped the party attract first-time voters and urban middle-class support.
TVK secured 108 seats and became the largest force in the Assembly.
Meanwhile, the DMK managed to win only 59 seats. The AIADMK secured 47 seats. No party crossed the majority mark, leading to a fractured mandate and uncertainty over government formation.
Left Parties Extend Support to Vijay
The race to form the next Tamil Nadu government took a major turn on May 8, 2026.
The Communist Party of India (CPI) and the Communist Party of India (Marxist) officially announced support for TVK. Both parties hold two seats each in the Assembly.
Their backing pushed the TVK-led alliance to 117 seats. The coalition now stands just one seat short of the majority mark.
Political analysts believe the Left parties made a strategic decision to support stability in Tamil Nadu. They also wanted to prevent both the DMK and AIADMK from returning to power.
The development strengthened speculation that Vijay could soon become the next Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.
VCK Support Could Seal Vijay’s Victory
Attention has now shifted to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi (VCK), which holds two important seats in the Assembly.
VCK leader Thol. Thirumavalavan has hinted that the party may support TVK. If that happens, the TVK-led alliance will comfortably cross the majority mark.
Such a move would clear the final hurdle for government formation.
The Indian National Congress, which won five seats, has already extended support to TVK. This support has further improved Vijay’s chances of forming the government.
Coalition Politics Returns to Tamil Nadu
The post-election period has turned Tamil Nadu into the center of intense political activity. Leaders from different parties continue to hold closed-door meetings and alliance discussions.
Coalition politics has suddenly become important in a State that usually witnessed strong single-party governments.
Reports also suggest that senior leaders from the DMK explored a possible understanding with the AIADMK. Their goal was reportedly to stop TVK’s rapid political rise.
Despite these developments, political momentum currently favors Vijay and his party.
A Generational Shift in Tamil Nadu Politics
Many analysts describe the 2026 Assembly election as a historic turning point for Tamil Nadu.
Voters appear to have demanded fresh leadership and new political alternatives. The election also showed signs of growing support for younger leadership and issue-based politics.
TVK’s rise reflects changing voter expectations, especially among youth and urban voters.
Experts believe Tamil Nadu may now enter a new political era shaped by coalition governments, changing alliances, and emerging leaders.
Can Vijay Become Tamil Nadu’s Next Chief Minister?
As alliance talks continue, one question dominates political discussions across the State: can Vijay secure the final numbers needed to form the government?
With support from Congress and Left parties already in place, TVK stands extremely close to power. If the VCK joins the alliance, Vijay could complete one of the most dramatic political rises in Tamil Nadu’s history.
The coming days may decide whether Tamil Nadu witnesses the beginning of a completely new political chapter under C. Joseph Vijay and Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam.
